Real-life couple Mario Cantone and Jerry Dixon and Tony nominee Malcolm Gets will star in the previously announced world premiere of Mark Gerrard’s Steve. Tony and Emmy winner Cynthia Nixon will direct the New Group production, which will begin performances at the Pershing Square Signature Center in November.
Steve follows Steven, a failed Broadway chorus boy turned stay-at-home dad. As he celebrates his birthday, he faces fear and uncertainty. He worries that Stephen, his partner of 14 years, is cheating on him, his best friend is dying of cancer and he questions what he’s done with his life. Additional casting and creative team for the bittersweet comedy will be announced later.
Cantone, who reunites with Nixon after appearing on Sex and the City together, has starred on Broadway in his solo show Laugh Whore, as well as Assassins, The Violet Hour and The Tempest. His husband, Dixon, recently appeared on Broadway in If/Then. Dixon's additional credits include Once on This Island, Five Guys Named Moe and tick, tick… BOOM!. Gets received a Tony nomination for his performance in Amour. He has also appeared on stage in Macbeth, The Story of My Life, Finian's Rainbow, A New Brain, Merrily We Roll Along and more and on the small screen in Caroline in the City.
The New Group season kicks off on August 5 with the off-Broadway premiere of Philip Ridley’s Mercury Fur. The cast will include Jack DiFalco, Bradley Fong, Paul Iacono, Peter Mark Kendall, Emily Cass McDonnell, Sea McHale, Zane Pais and Tony Revolori. New Group Artistic Director Scott Elliott will helm the production, which will open officially on August 19 at the Romulus Linney Courtyard Theatre.
Mercury Fur explores a society ravaged by warring gangs and a hallucinogenic-drug epidemic. Elliot and Darren, under the sway of the ruthless Spinx, throw parties for rich clients in abandoned apartment buildings, parties that help guests act out their darkest, most sinister fantasies. As the teenage brothers prepare for the latest festivities, some unexpected guests threaten the balance of the world they have created. The production will feature scenic design by Derek McLane, costumes by Susan Hilferty, lighting design by Jeff Croiter and sound design by M.L. Dogg.
As previously reported, the New Group’s season will also include a revival of Sam Shepard’s Buried Child, starring Oscar nominees Ed Harris and Amy Madigan. The staging, directed by Elliott, will begin performances in February 2016.
